tips for domestic violence victims in texas

Stuck on a lease with your abuser?

If you have not involved the police, go to your local DV shelter (or call them) and get set up with an advocate. They can give you a document that confirms that you're a victim of domestic violence - give this to your landlord and tell them you are removing yourself from the lease.

Most of the time, they will ask you for a copy of a police report. THIS IS NOT REQUIRED! For more information, read Texas Property Code 92.016.

Reaching out to a shelter is very safe, easy, and free. This process is not super complicated - the paper they give you looks similar to the one I used below. You can do this at any point - note that I had this done on 7/23/2021. My lease went out on 7/24/2021, and I was not liable for any termination fees or damages to the unit.
